I would like to play a Horizon Tripper in KotC 2!

Here's the place to talk about the features you would like to see in a sequel to KotC.

I would like to play a Horizon Tripper in KotC 2!

Postby Gavinfoxx » Wed Jun 26, 2013 9:41 pm

I would really, really, really like to play something close to the SRD version of the Horizon Tripper:

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80415

Or:

http://www.thetangledweb.net/forums/profiler/view_char.php?cid=55074

The basic way to do this fighting style alone with only SRD feats is:

Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Spiked Chain+Combat Expertise+Improved Trip+Combat Reflexes+Knockdown+Hold the line+Stand Still

Will anything like that combo be possible?

A character specialised in trip? That will be possible with a Fighter, or the other melee classes. Multiclassing won't be there though.

What about Stand Still and Knockdown? Those things in particular...

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#standStill

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#knockDown

Will those be in?

The idea is to have a huuuge amount of reach with a Spiked Chain or Guisarme and Gauntlets / Spiked Gauntlets / Armor Spikes, and maybe even Enlarge Person, and be able to lock down and AoO the entire battlefield...

So you trip them, get an attack of opportunity when they go down, an attack of opportunity when they try to get up, can knock them down whenever you do more than 10 points of damage (which, with power attack, might be 'every time you hit'), etc. etc.

Also, will you be able to get animal companions / wild cohorts / purchased and trained animals (Mules! Oxen!), which you can give simple tricks like 'Defend', 'Attack', and 'Attack any', where they will attack the closest enemy? Can you give animals barding? Can you give anything that isn't proficient in armor leather armor or mithral chainmail, and if they don't cast spells or aren't a monk, they are fine in it? Can you buy a riding dog trained for war, and use that as a tripper?

Also, will you add something equivalent to:

'Tumble' actions and 'Withdrawal' actions?

The list of planned feats is there: http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/FWE/Pages/FWE_Feats.htm

Stand Sill would require the player to give input any time an AOO is triggered. I'm not interested in that.

Knock-Down is something that triggers a trip attempt right after an attack. Sounds a bit complicated and it doesn't say over what amount of time the 10 points should be dealt. A single attack? A full round? In my opinion, Trip is just fine without this feat. With Improved Trip you will be able to do a standard attack and trip attempt in the same round.

For the moment I'm planning reach weapons, but I'm not 100% sure they will be in the game. Also, reach will not ever exceed two squares. Enlarge will increase the damage not the reach. The list of planned weapons is there http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/FWE/Pages/FWE_WeaponGroups.htm

I don't think that a creature falling down triggers an AOO. Getting up, yes. There won't be Power Attack.

There won't be cohorts, mounts or animal companions. Anything that's complicated is not going to be in the game unless I talk about it somewhere on this site.
There won't be Tumble, Withdrawal or Run actions.

Knock down is per melee attack, not per round. It automatically gives you a trip attempt on each melee attack that gives over 10 points of damage.

Will your classes have variants like wild shape ranger, druidic avenger, whirling frenzy barbarian, etc.?

Re: falling down, that's a benefit of improved.trip.

"If you trip an opponent in melee combat, you immediately get a melee attack against that opponent as if you hadn’t used your attack for the trip attempt.". This especially works well with knock down and two handed tripping weapons. Attack, do more than 10 pts of damage, trip them, attack. Works great with Guisarme.

No, there are no plans for that.
Re: falling down, that's a benefit of improved.trip.
Oh I see. But it won't work like that in the game.

What I mean with the srd Deadly Hunter, Spontaneous Divine Caster, and Druidic Avenger variants is that those are good ways of replacing Druid class features with simpler ones balanced for simple type video games. You are already changing the Druid, why not make it something like those three SRD options?

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#druidVariantDruidicAvenger
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#otherClassVariants
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/spontaneousDivineCasters.htm

This gives up both Wild Shape and Animal Companion, and lowers the number of spells Druids know...

Not actually have MULTIPLE types of Druid... but just make this (or something like it) the default Druid.

Also, will there be a way to mod improved trip to do what I said in the game? Like how it works in Temple of Elemental Evil? Or will you allow that as an optional patch?

Thanks for the links, I've checked them out and yeah, those are okay classes which would not require a lot more work.
Currently, the Druid's design gives him a bonus to natural armour.
Maybe there could be a character-creation choice between Natural Armour bonuses or Rage. What do you think?

No to all these.

Well, I am generally for sticking close to the SRD, at least somewhat. More because no one has ever done that before. Even if you just use options from the SRD in ways they aren't supposed to go together, or renaming them or stuff. Or even daisy changing alternative class features. Heck, I love thug sneak attack fighter and feat rogue -- when you multiclass between them, you make a great swashbuckler, if you do it right!

Like take this:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/classFeatureVariants.htm#rageVariantWhirlingFrenzy

That's my favorite rage variant. Perhaps you could give the Barbarian that (it's better than Rage) and the Druid Rage in the way those options mention? So one is strength and attack based (remember it works on a charge or a standard action!), one is more Strength and Constitution based? If only to differentiate them?

I mean, I'd personally give the Barbarian AND the Druid Pounce (at least when they could get it normally; 1 for barbarian, 5 for druid with wild shape), but that's just me. Pounce just makes combat soooo much more dynamic and mobile!

Heck for monk, I especially like the Passive Way variant of the Monk... but generally only if Improved Trip gives some of the bonuses that you are saying it won't. (sad...)

And I don't like natural armor overly much. It's okay, I suppose -- but things like miss chance are wayyyyy more important than armor in D&D. And it's not like this Druid can make their natural armor an insight bonus to ac to apply it to touch ac, like a sorcerer or wizard can.

Remember, Druids can wear Leather, Studded Leather as long as the studding is alchemical wood, various types of Chitin armor (of which there are light, medium, AND heavy), Hide Armor, various types of Ironwood Armor (breastplate most commonly, sometimes also banded mail, rarely full plate), dragonhide full plate, etc. etc. Go out of core and there are woods that act similarly to Mithral. AND they get a spell combo that makes essentially infinite masterwork Ironwood breastplates that they can temporarily make +1 breastplates, by level 12 or so. So they won't usually be lacking armor.
