Be careful when dealing with the baddies!

On the contrary, mr Omnipresent-Authority-Figure, my real problem (once I had got myself trapped, that is) was rather that I wasn't reckless enough. ;)

On topic: must it really rain every twenty seconds when the party is outside? I know you're British and all, but the rain algorithm in this game is a bit...extreme!

Personally I didn't think it rained enough. Felt to me like the desert.

That orc stockade fight *spoiler* with the gnoll wizards casting web on you then polymorphing into spiders (!) was pretty awesome. Thankfully freedom of movement on the tank and a couple of well-placed fireballs (fire + web = ouch) carried the day. There's another ambush-style fight later on that's currently giving me some trouble. *cough* Mountain Pass *cough*

Honestly, I prefer fewer campfires. It's not a matter of running back and forth, so much as challenging myself to use my spells (and knights) efficiently, and having a bunch of scrolls and wands for when I mess up. For example, that cure wand in the Knight's Keep costs peanuts for the longevity it can offer in a tight spot (assuming vendor loot is not random here folks).

Also the fact that all spells are cast spontaneously helps to survive with limited resting, since you never have any dead spell slots. In other D&D games, loading up with confusion and hold person etc. before suddenly realizing you're fighting two dungeon levels of undead can be a real headache. Take that Icewind Dale! :D
What's with people who answer their own questions? I guess they're just stupid.

Must be a subconscious design choice! :) [Edit] Sorry if I sounded a bit overbearing in my previous post!

You're right, it isn't.

Well, I'll be! I never saw that campsite on the first level of the Orc Stockade. And I was in that darn room!! I just didn't recognize the "campfire" in the room as a campsite. Yay, me...

With that campsite, the whole dungeon design makes much more sense. I've got no complaints about it now. My bad. Had I known/spotted that campsite before I made it through the second level of the dungeon, my life would have been sooo much easier. Before the campsite discovery, I was gritting my teeth and swearing loudly at the monitor, managing to clear the 2nd level with only two wands for magic (as both of my casters were well out of spells). Come the final battle against the main baddie and I'm almost out of wand spells too and limping along. I'm grinding and grinding the battle for hours (lost count of how many party wipes I suffered) wondering what kind of sadistic b*stard designed this and thought it was at least remotely fun and fair. Once I discovered the campsite on the 1st floor, the final battle is (almost) a breeze. What sweet revenge!! Hah, take this ice blast (or whatever the big AoE ice attack is)! Oh, you want some more? Have a fireball to the face! My treat. *mad laughter* ;)

EDITED for a few typos and correcting my limping English (as I believe in the 2nd paragraph it wasn't clear I was writing about my experiences before I discovered the campsite.

Same here, and knowing about those camp fires really makes you appreciate just how consistently the "accomplish something challenging, then get rewarded with camp fire" principle I spelled out earlier seems to have been applied in KotC. I like that. A lot.

That said, couldn't those tiny little camp fires just be a little bit more easy to spot? Green fire or something would perhaps not feel quite right, but anything to ensure that the Here Be Camp Fire instinct gets going would be appreciated...

Heh, BG characters are very quotable. That was Jaheira, right? (It's been awhile.) Minsc is of course THE ultimate source of good quotes. My favorite being: "Butt-kicking for Goodness!" 8-)

OK, less off-topic now. Could the interface be made so, that you could press a number 1-4 to select a character and then press "I" to open that character's inventory. AFAIK, pressing "I" opens the leader's inventory, but there is no shortcut to other characters' inventories. Additionally this should work the other way around too - when the inventory screen is open, pressing a number 1-4 would go to that character's inventory.

Also, I'd like "U" to stand for use, so you could press U when you have the inventory open and directly select the item to use without dragging it to the Use spot (have the cursor become a "use cursor" so to speak). Because of my stumbling around in the Orc Stockade, I used wands a lot and the procedure of e.g. using a healing wand several times in a row is a chore the could be made a bit smoother. It's not a big issue, but would sure be nice if there would be a quicker way of doing that.

On the inventory shortcuts: use 5-8 to open each character's inventory, or push I while mousing over that character.

Ahh, okay. Good to know there's a shortcut already, never thought of trying 5-8.

BTW, is there a manual for KotC somewhere, as I didn't seem to spot one in the game's folder, or is the manual the in-game help files only - being help files for the d20/OGL rules (which are MUCH appreciated!) - but there's no list for shortcut keys or the like? Or have I failed my Perception roll yet again...

EDIT: Something I just remembered. I'd like the dice notation in the game be like it is in all RPG books I know of, that is the size of the die is given as single digits when there is only a single digit to it, as 1d4, 1d6 and 1d8, NOT 1d04, 1d06, 1d08. Not a biggie either, but this just bugs me.

There's a readme file with all the commands in Start/Programs/Knights of the Chalice/readme.txt

I'm trying to add multiple ranks to the forum and it's a mess... :-(
