I did not mind the ambushes. It required me to think tactically. I had to get a cloak of blur early for my mage, then a concealment cloak. I think it was easy to focus too much on offense in this game. During the first half of the game, I maxed out on getting the best weapons, but then later in the game, I had to shift my focus to defense including concealment cloaks, spell resistant platemail combined with fortification against criticals. Also, major fire resistance rings. There is an excessive focus on fire spells especially fireball and wall of fire so getting major fire resistance rings in the game prevented a lot of damage. Being able to craft the maximum on defensive items helped a lot in the later part of the game. Every character ended up with dex bracers, wisdom helments, and strength belts. Think tactically, early in the game, get the maximum damage to kill fast, then mid game switch to better defense, you will need it especially with the gnolls.
