"Bodyguard-type" character classes?

Postby Darthcast » Sun Apr 17, 2022 12:04 pm

I'd like my main character to be a "bodyguard-type" character class:
Tough and hard to kill with spells or abilities that can be used to protect, heal or even resurrect party members.
In regards of fighting enemies, she should be more focused on disabling them then dealing lots of damage.

Which classes would be most viable?

I tried creating a female champion with reach weapons (Valkyrie-style) for this, but then realized she cannot get several of the feats that would be useful in contrary to a fighter for example. :(

I see a Dwarven fighter working in this role. Position him next to vulnerable characters, and the speed penalty won't matter. Select the die hard line of feats, and set the character as ready vs. approach.

Thanks, I guess dwarves could work well because of their increased Constitution and because they don't need to move a lot. I would miss some skills or spells for healing and protecting though...
Too bad multi-class with cleric is not an option.

How about dwarf paladin? That would give you some access to healing magic, and the saving throw bonus that effects allies within the aura would fit nicely with the bodyguard theme. I recall thinking Paladins were better than Champions.

The auras do seem useful for the theme. Never liked paladins much in other games before but I guess I'll give it a try. A female dwarven paladin bodyguard does seem unusual enough to escape the stereotype of a religious fanatic.
