To me it's a matter of fairness. If you can pre-buff with haste, stoneskin, premonition, bless, prayer, spell resistance, magic weapon, righteous might, elemental immunity and whatnot, then the enemies should be able to as well. And then you get an even more ridiculous situation where every combatant is loaded with pre-battle spells. The second thing is that it's a bit of a pain having to cast all these spells, in Neverwinter and even in TOEE, prior to all important battles.
